Potentials for Next House Speaker Lining Up

Representatives Scalise, Jordan, Emmer, and others are candidates.

After the ouster of Representative Kevin McCarthy of California as House Speaker, other members of Congress are seeking the opportunity for the leadership office.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana has tossed his hat into the ring. At age 57, he is a well-liked conservative but is presently undergoing treatment for blood cancer.

Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota has also been named, but he said he would only make a bid for the leadership position if Representative Scalise decided not to pursue it. Congressman Emmer is 61 and has a strong following.

The Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, age 59, confirmed that he was seeking the Speaker’s job.

Representative Elise Stefanik of New York, the youngest of the group being mentioned for speaker at age 39, is the chair of the House Republican Conference.

Also named as dark-horse candidates are Representatives Kevin Hern of Oklahoma and Darrell Issa of California. The Speaker pro tem Patrick McHenry of North Carolina has indicated he would not seek the position.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For wisdom for Speaker pro tempore McHenry as he temporarily presides over the lower chamber of Congress.
  • For discernment for members of the House as they consider whom to support as they next House Speaker.
  • For the Lord’s purposes to be accomplished in and through the House of Representatives.
